History of Venue 28

Early Beginnings - Technical Institute (1898 - Early 20th Century

The building at 28 Beckenham Road was originally constructed in 1898 as the Beckenham Technical Institue for the Beckenham Urban District Council. Designed by architect J. A. Angell and built by T. W. Jones, it was created in an attractive Dutch architectural style, featuring red brick and terracotta detailing, mullioned windows, and a distinctive central cupola architectural flourishes that give the building its character today.

This institute was part of a wider late-Victorian movement to provide techincal education to local communities, equipping young people with skills in science, art, and applied subjects.

Educational Use - Beckenham Technical Institue & Beyond

For many decades, the building functioned as an educational establishment. Notably, it served as the first home of what would later become Langley Park School for Boys when it opened as the Beckenham Technical Institute around the turn of the 20th century.

Over time the institute underwent various name changes and developments as the educational needs of the area grew. Eventually, as the school expanded, it relocated to larger premises, leaving the original institute building available for other purposes.

Architectural Heritage - Grade II Listing

The building is officially Grade II listed, recognised for its architectual and historic interest. The listing protects its distinctive facades, ornamental detailing, and overall character, ensuring that renovation and reuse respects the building’s heritage.

A New Life as an Events Venue

After sensitive renovation, the former technical institute was transformed into what is now Venue 28, a flexible events and community space in the heart of Beckenham. While retaining its external grandeur and historic charm, the interior was updated to support modern use, with spacious halls and flexible rooms suited for everything from weddings and corporate functions to class, markets, and community events.

Today, Venue 28 is well-known locally not only as an elegant venue for private celebrations but also a space for community activities, classes, workshops, and even filiming location hire, continuing the building’s legacy as a hub for learning, gathering and creativity.
